Toronto Villa — Basement Living, Open Main Floor & Primary Suite

George Villa designed and built the complete interior of this Toronto family home — a full basement level with its own living, kitchen and dining and a bedroom, a bright open main floor of living, dining and kitchen around a floating timber stair, and a second floor dedicated to the primary suite and guest bedrooms. Every room was drawn from the client’s floor plan, produced in our Foshan factory and shipped flat-packed in numbered export crates. Below is the finished project, level by level and room by room.

The Challenge

This Canadian home treats the basement as a real floor — not storage — and still has to keep the main floor bright and the bedrooms calm.

The brief asked for a fully finished basement with its own living, kitchen and dining area and a bedroom with closet storage, over a main floor of open living, dining and kitchen, and a second floor with the primary suite and guest bedrooms. The challenge was to make the below-grade level warm and genuinely livable — with its own kitchen and storage — while keeping the main floor light and open and the second floor quiet and private.

The client also wanted one consistent material story across all three levels — light wood, honed stone and soft neutral finishes — so the basement reads as part of the same home rather than a separate entertainment space below.

Floor Plan Analysis

The villa is organised as three full levels: a finished basement living floor, an open main floor, and a private second floor of bedrooms.

The basement is a complete living level in its own right — an open living, kitchen and dining zone, a bedroom with closet storage, and service space. Because it has its own kitchen and seating, it works as a guest floor or a family entertainment level without going through the main floor.

The main floor is the open heart of the house: living and dining arranged around a floating timber stair, a bright kitchen with a stone island, and a powder room. The second floor is the private wing — the primary suite with its own walk-in closet and en-suite, and the guest bedrooms, each calm and light.

Room-by-Room Solution

Living

The main-floor living room is the open heart of the house. A low sectional faces a full media wall, and a sculptural chandelier marks the space without weighing it down. The sightline stays clear through to the dining and kitchen, so the whole main floor reads as one generous, bright level.

Open Dining & Stair

The dining area sits directly beside the main stair. A floating timber stair with a slim balustrade keeps the transition between levels light, and the long dining table stays connected to the living and kitchen, so serving during a dinner never means leaving the room.

Kitchen

The main-floor kitchen is organised around a generous wood-front island with bar seating. A full appliance wall and clean, handle-less runs keep the working surfaces clear, and the open plan lets the cook stay with the family in the dining and living.

Basement Living & Kitchen

The basement is a finished floor in its own right. An open living, kitchen and dining zone with a dark stone island and warm layered lighting works as a guest floor or a family entertainment level, and the separate bedroom on this level keeps it fully self-contained.

Primary Bedroom

The primary suite leads the second floor. An art-panel headboard wall frames the bed, and the room stays bright and calm with the same light wood and soft stone seen on the main floor, keeping the upstairs wing private and restful.

The en-suite — a glass-enclosed shower in honed stone

Primary En-suite

The en-suite is finished in the same honed stone as the rest of the home. A full glass-enclosed shower, a clean vanity and warm lighting make the primary bathroom a proper retreat rather than a service room.

Guest Bedroom

The guest bedrooms on the second floor follow the same calm logic as the primary suite — a wood headboard wall, soft neutral bedding and built-in storage — so the whole upstairs wing reads as one quiet, consistent zone.

Walk-in Closet

The walk-in is finished to the same standard as the bedrooms. Full-height wood shelving, a central island and proper hanging rails make it real storage for the primary suite, and the same system is repeated in the basement bedroom’s closet.

Material & Finish Direction

One light, warm palette runs through all three levels, so the finished basement reads as part of the same home as the primary suite above. The base is light wood joinery and warm neutral cabinetry, paired with a soft honed stone in the wet areas and on the kitchen islands.

Finishes stay matte and tactile — matte-lacquered fronts, light timber, honed stone and soft hardware — with the floating timber stair on the main floor and the dark stone island in the basement as the two deliberate moments of contrast in an otherwise calm, light scheme.

Production & Export

The whole villa was built in our Foshan factory and shipped as a flat-packed, numbered set — the same process we use for every export project.

01

Production Drawings

Every room is drawn to the millimetre from the client’s floor plan. The client approves full production drawings and material samples before any board is cut.

02

Factory Build

Cabinetry, stone, joinery and built-ins are manufactured and assembled to the approved drawings, then quality-checked room by room on the factory floor.

03

Flat-Pack & Number

Completed units are disassembled, foam-wrapped and crated. Every panel is labelled with a room and an assembly number so on-site installation follows the labels.

04

Sea Freight & Install

Crates are palletised and shipped by sea to the nearest port, then delivered to site for the contractor to install from the numbered drawings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you build a whole villa interior from our floor plan?

Yes. We work from the client’s floor plan and produce complete production drawings for every room — cabinetry, stone, joinery, lighting and soft furnishings — for approval before production. That is exactly how this Toronto villa was made.

Do you design finished basements as full living floors?

Yes. This project’s basement was designed as a complete level in its own right — its own living, kitchen and dining zone plus a bedroom with closet storage — so it works as a guest floor or a family entertainment level without going through the main floor.

How do you keep a main floor bright and open with a stair in the middle?

We detail the stair as a light, floating element — timber treads and a slim balustrade — and keep the sightlines clear from the living through the dining to the kitchen, so the stair becomes a feature of the open plan instead of a barrier.

What materials did you use on this project?

The villa uses a light, warm palette — light oak joinery, warm neutral cabinetry, honed stone in the wet areas and kitchen islands, and soft hardware. Every material is specified on the production drawings and can be adjusted per project.

How is a full villa packed and shipped?

Every unit is flat-packed, foam-wrapped and placed in export crates, with each panel numbered by room and assembly step. The crates ship by sea to your nearest port and install on site by following the numbered labels.

Can we change finishes or layouts before production?

Yes — that is what the approval stage is for. You can change finishes, colours, hardware and, within the structural grid, room layouts before we release the order for production.
